Choosing your first Hapé
Choosing Your First Hapé
Beginning your journey with Hapé can feel both exciting and a little overwhelming. With dozens of blends, many Indigenous traditions, and a variety of preparation methods, it's natural to wonder where to begin.
The good news is that there isn't a single "right" first Hapé. Rather than searching for the strongest blend or the one someone else recommends, we encourage choosing a medicine that aligns with your intention and allows you to build a respectful relationship over time.
Start with Your Intention
Before choosing a blend, take a moment to ask yourself:
- Why am I interested in Hapé?
- What am I hoping to learn about myself?
- What kind of experience am I seeking?
- Am I approaching this with curiosity rather than expectation?
There are no perfect answers. Simply taking time to reflect helps create a more intentional beginning.
Begin Gently
Many newcomers assume they should choose the strongest Hapé available. In our experience, beginning with a gentler or balanced blend often creates a more supportive introduction.
Gentler medicines allow you to become familiar with the ceremonial process, your own responses, and the subtle qualities that can be easy to overlook when intensity becomes the primary focus.
Remember: A meaningful experience is not measured by how intense it feels.
Explore by Felt Character
At Sacred Plants, we've organized our Hapé collection according to the qualities most commonly described by our community. These categories are guides, not guarantees, as every person's experience is unique.
🌅 Rise
Often chosen by those looking for brightness, clarity, or an uplifting ceremonial atmosphere.
🌊 Flow
Balanced and versatile, Flow blends are frequently selected for meditation, reflection, and quiet presence. Many first-time explorers appreciate beginning here.
🔥 Ignite
Generally experienced as more focused or intense, Ignite blends are often explored after gaining familiarity with Hapé.
🌳 Root
Root blends are commonly chosen by those seeking steadiness, grounding, and deep presence.
Understanding Relative Intensity
Every Hapé in our collection is also assigned a relative intensity.
1 • Gentle
A softer introduction suitable for many first-time users.
2 • Balanced
A comfortable middle ground with noticeable character.
3 • Strong
More experienced users often explore these after becoming familiar with Hapé.
4 • Intense
These blends may produce a significantly stronger experience and are generally best approached with previous experience and careful preparation.
Remember that intensity does not indicate quality. Some of the most beloved ceremonial medicines are among the gentlest.
Explore One Blend at a Time
When beginning, resist the temptation to purchase many different blends at once. Instead, spend time getting to know one medicine.
Each ceremonial experience may feel different depending on your preparation, intention, environment, and where you are in life. Developing a relationship with one blend often teaches far more than quickly moving from one to another.
Learn About the Indigenous Traditions
Each Hapé reflects the culture and traditions of the community that prepares it. As you explore, we encourage learning about the Indigenous peoples behind the medicine.
Understanding their history and traditions deepens appreciation for the knowledge they have preserved across generations.

Our Recommendation for Beginners
If you're new to Hapé, we generally suggest:
- Begin with a Gentle or Balanced blend.
- Consider starting with a Flow or Root profile.
- Create a quiet, comfortable setting.
- Allow yourself time afterward for reflection.
- Keep a journal of your observations.
- Let curiosity guide your learning rather than chasing intensity.
There is no finish line. The most rewarding journeys often unfold slowly.
From the Forest
Across the Amazon, there is no single "correct" way to work with Hapé. Practices vary among Indigenous communities, families, and ceremonial lineages. The educational resources shared by Sacred Plants are intended to encourage respectful learning while recognizing that these living traditions continue to evolve within the communities that steward them.
