Hapé Safety & FAQ

Hapé Safety & Frequently Asked Questions

Hapé has been prepared and used within Indigenous Amazonian traditions for generations. Like any ceremonial practice, it deserves to be approached thoughtfully and responsibly.

The information below is intended to support informed decision-making but is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Is Hapé right for everyone?

No. Individuals have different health conditions, medications, sensitivities, and life circumstances that may affect whether Hapé is appropriate for them.

If you have questions about your health, consult a qualified healthcare professional before using any ceremonial medicine.

Who should avoid Hapé?

Because every situation is unique, Sacred Plants cannot determine whether Hapé is appropriate for any individual.

Extra caution is generally advised for people who:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Have uncontrolled high blood pressure or serious cardiovascular disease.
  • Have recently had nasal or sinus surgery.
  • Have significant respiratory illness.
  • Are taking medications or have medical conditions that may be affected by nicotine.
  • Have been advised by their healthcare provider to avoid nicotine-containing products.

If you are uncertain, do not guess. Seek guidance from a qualified healthcare professional familiar with your medical history.

Does Hapé contain nicotine?

Yes. Traditional Hapé contains Mapacho (Nicotiana rustica), a traditional Amazonian tobacco that naturally contains nicotine.

Mapacho is culturally and botanically distinct from commercial tobacco products, but it still contains nicotine and should be approached with the same respect given to other nicotine-containing products.

Is Hapé addictive?

Traditional ceremonial use differs significantly from habitual commercial tobacco use. However, because Hapé typically contains nicotine, it has the potential for dependence. We encourage intentional, respectful use rather than frequent or habitual use.

Can Hapé be used every day?

There is no universal answer. Traditional practices vary widely among Indigenous communities, and modern ceremonial practitioners also follow different approaches.

Rather than focusing on frequency, consider whether your use remains intentional, respectful, and aligned with your personal practice.

What should I expect?

Experiences vary considerably. Factors include:

  • The specific blend.
  • The amount used.
  • Your preparation.
  • Your environment.
  • Your physical and emotional state.
  • Your previous experience.

Approach each ceremony with openness rather than expecting the same experience every time.

Can I drive or operate machinery afterward?

Until you understand how Hapé affects you personally, avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require your full attention immediately after use. Allow yourself time to rest and reflect.

Can I combine Hapé with other medicines?

Ceremonial practices differ greatly, and individual health circumstances vary. If you are taking prescription medications or have concerns about potential interactions, consult a qualified healthcare professional before combining Hapé with any substance.

How should I store Hapé?

To preserve freshness:

  • Store in a cool, dry location.
  • Keep containers tightly sealed.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture, heat, or direct sunlight.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Properly stored Hapé often remains fresh for extended periods, though aromatic qualities may gradually change over time.
