What is Hapé?
An Introduction to an Ancient Amazonian Tradition
Hapé (pronounced ha-PAY), sometimes written Rapé or Rapeh, is a traditional ceremonial snuff prepared by Indigenous peoples of the Amazon rainforest. For generations, it has been made with great care and intention using finely sifted medicinal plants, sacred tree ashes, and Mapacho (Nicotiana rustica), a traditional Amazonian tobacco.
Across the Amazon, Hapé is far more than a substance. It is part of a living cultural tradition. Each blend reflects the knowledge, prayers, and practices of the community that prepares it. While recipes vary between tribes, every authentic Hapé carries the wisdom of generations who have cultivated a respectful relationship with the forest.
Today, Hapé is used both within Indigenous communities and by people around the world who seek to honor these traditions through intentional ceremonial practice.
How is Hapé Traditionally Made?
Authentic Hapé is handcrafted through a process that can take days or even weeks. While methods vary by tribe, the preparation generally includes:
- Harvesting and curing Mapacho (Nicotiana rustica)
- Collecting medicinal plants from the forest
- Preparing sacred tree ashes from specific species
- Drying, grinding, and carefully sifting each ingredient
- Blending the medicine according to traditional recipes
- Offering prayers, songs, or intention throughout the preparation
For many Indigenous artisans, creating Hapé is itself a ceremonial practice. Care, patience, and intention are considered just as important as the ingredients themselves.
Why Do Different Tribes Make Different Hapé?
Every Indigenous nation has developed its own traditions, preferred plants, and ceremonial practices over generations. A Huni Kuin blend may be prepared quite differently than one from the Yawanawá, Katukina, or Nukini peoples. Even within the same community, individual artisans may create unique recipes passed down through their families or teachers.
Rather than asking which Hapé is "best," it is often more meaningful to appreciate the diversity of these traditions and the unique character each blend offers.
At Sacred Plants, we identify each Hapé by the Indigenous community that prepares it whenever possible, helping preserve the connection between the medicine and its cultural origins.
What Does Hapé Feel Like?
Every experience is unique and depends on many factors, including the specific blend, the amount used, your environment, your physical and emotional state, and your previous experience.
Many people describe experiences that may include:
- A sense of grounding and presence
- Increased mental clarity
- Deepened meditation or prayer
- A feeling of connection with nature
- Emotional reflection
- A period of stillness or inward focus
Some blends are experienced as gentle and centering, while others are significantly more intense. It is important to remember that stronger does not necessarily mean better. Many experienced practitioners regularly choose gentler blends that best support their intentions.
Choosing a Hapé
Because there are many different blends available, selecting one can feel overwhelming at first. To make this easier, Sacred Plants organizes Hapé in three ways.
By Indigenous Tradition
Each blend is identified by the community that prepares it, honoring its cultural lineage.
By Felt Character
Because individual experiences vary, we've grouped our Hapé according to the qualities most commonly described by our community.
- Rise – Often experienced as uplifting, bright, or mentally clarifying.
- Flow – Often described as balanced, open, and supportive of meditation or creative practice.
- Ignite – Frequently chosen for focused work, determination, or more intense ceremonial experiences.
- Root – Commonly associated with grounding, stability, and deep presence.
These categories are intended as guides rather than guarantees, since each person's experience is unique.
By Relative Intensity
We also classify each blend on a four-level scale:
- 1 • Gentle
- 2 • Balanced
- 3 • Strong
- 4 • Intense
This reflects the relative intensity within our collection. It is not the quality or effectiveness of the medicine.
Working with Hapé Respectfully
Many people choose to approach Hapé as part of a personal practice of reflection, meditation, prayer, or ceremony. Whatever your reason for exploring this tradition, we encourage approaching it with:
- Curiosity instead of expectation.
- Respect for the Indigenous communities that have preserved this knowledge.
- Careful preparation.
- Clear personal intention.
- Time afterward for reflection and integration.
For many, the most meaningful experiences arise not from seeking dramatic effects, but from developing a thoughtful and respectful relationship with the medicine over time.
Our Commitment
Sacred Plants is committed to honoring the Indigenous communities who continue to steward these traditions. We work to build respectful relationships with our partners, support traditional artisans whenever possible, and share educational resources that encourage informed, intentional engagement rather than sensationalism.
Every handcrafted blend tells the story of the people, forests, and traditions from which it comes. Our hope is that, by learning about these traditions, we can help preserve and honor them for generations to come.
